Sun protection

What you apply to block UV is also holding in heat

Two things are true at once: UV ages skin, and so does heat. The way sunscreen handles the first makes the second worse.

Noon, and you're heading out. You were thorough about it — enough sunscreen, evenly applied, nothing missed. That part you got right.

Then you step into the sun. Thirty degrees, absolute humidity in the low twenties, asphalt throwing heat back up. The film on your face starts its second job: keeping heat and sweat in.

Where the contradiction sits

UV is not the only variable in skin ageing. Heat is one in its own right — an epidermis held at an elevated temperature for long stretches ages faster. That matters more in the humid tropics, where more than half the year sits at that temperature.

And for sunscreen to work it has to form an even, reasonably durable film across the surface. That film blocks UV. It also blocks sweat from evaporating — and evaporation is the only way skin sheds heat.

So: the thing you do to handle ageing variable A makes ageing variable B worse.

Why this bites harder here than in Europe

Cooling depends on evaporation, and evaporation depends on how much more water the surrounding air can take. Taipei in July holds 22.2 g/m³ — the air is already close to saturated, so sweat evaporates slowly. Luxembourg in the same month holds 10.2, leaving more than twice the room.

Same sunscreen, same thickness: in a European summer the trapped heat still escapes. Here it doesn't. That isn't a flaw in the formula. It's a difference in the air it meets.

🔴 This is not an argument for skipping sunscreen

Read the sentence to the end: UV does far more damage than the heat this film traps, and UV has no substitute. Heat you can work on through timing, shade and sequence. UV can only be blocked.

So the conclusion isn't 'use less' or 'skip it' — that trades a small problem for a large one. It's: keep applying it, and fix the things around it so that this one layer isn't also responsible for cooling you.

Running it through the four levers

  1. Quantity: this is the one layer you never reduceEverything else on this site argues for using less in humid heat. Sunscreen is the exception. Under-applying is the same as not applying, and nothing else compensates for the shortfall. Reduce the layers underneath it, not it.
  2. Order: clear the space beneath itThe more oils and serums stacked under sunscreen, the thicker and less breathable the whole film becomes. Keep the morning round light and save the rich layers for the evening, so sunscreen is the only occlusive layer present.
  3. Timing: finish fifteen minutes before you leaveNot as you walk out. The film needs time to set, and in those fifteen minutes your core temperature settles rather than being sealed in from the shower or the kitchen.
  4. Interval: deal with sweat before you reapplyAdding a second coat straight onto sweat sandwiches the moisture between two films. Blot it off first, then reapply. Costs nothing; almost everyone skips it.

And one thing that isn't a lever but works better than all of them: don't be in the sun. A hat, an umbrella, the shaded side of the street, moving outdoor plans away from midday — these solve UV and heat at the same time, and are the only move that requires no trade-off.

The argument that a sunscreen film impedes cooling, and that heat is an independent ageing variable, is cited from PuraVida, A Skincare Philosophy Born for Climate Adaptation. Humidity figures are ERA5 six-year monthly means, 2019–2024, converted from dew point via the Magnus formula. This describes mechanism and technique; it is not medical advice.

Sunscreen isn't a question of whether. It's a question of how.
Heat can be handled with timing, shade and sequence. UV can only be handled with sunscreen.
Only one of the two has no alternative.
